Compression leggings can help increase blood flow, reduce muscle fatigue and prevent strain before, during and after workouts. These capris are super popular, and they're praised by online reviewers, especially those with knee issues.
Because of the very snug fit, they're a bit harder to get on than regular leggings. You need to make sure they're properly aligned as the support panels are designed to offer different levels of compression throughout your legs. The support panels are designed to go above and below your knees to help with stability. Ensuring proper panel placement should also make it easier for you to find the right fit. They're also made with a wicking material to prevent overheating.
What to look for when shopping for the best workout leggings
✔️ Activities: Before shopping for new leggings, consider what type of workout you plan to wear them for.
- Low-impact exercise like yoga or Pilates: Opt for a softer, brushed fabric that looks matte for a comfy feel that'll move with you.
- High-impact exercise like weightlifting or running: Choose a smooth, shiny fabric to reduce chafing.
✔️ Material: Synthetic performance fibers like nylon and polyester are better than cotton for workout pants because they’re often moisture-wicking, more durable and have better stretch.
✔️ Fit: Most testers preferred high-waisted workout leggings. Note that not all high-waisted leggings will hit the waist at the same spot — in our testing, we found that some brands offer ultra high-waisted options for coverage past your waist.
✔️ Inseam: To find your best fit, measure your inseam with a tape measure. (Read our guide to learn more about how to measure yourself at home,) Your inseam refers to the length from your crotch to your ankle. If the legging doesn't offer a variety of inseam options, confirm that the inseam will not be too long or short before purchasing. Most leggings are sold in the following inseam styles:
- Full-length: These are designed to go all the way to your ankle with very little gap until your socks.
- 7/8: Slightly shorter than full-length, this style of legging should have a small space between your sock and the end of the tight.
- Capri: With a cropped fit, these offer the least coverage and should end mid-way down your calf.
✔️ Construction: The seams on the inside should be flat, not raised — they're more comfortable and help reduce irritation caused by sweat and movement. You should also make sure there’s a gusset (an extra piece of fabric in the crotch area that’s typically triangular or diamond-shaped). It prevents leggings from riding up, especially with lots of motion.
✔️ Moisture wicking: Most activewear claims to be moisture-wicking, but not all fabrics passed our test. To see how a pair of leggings handles moisture, place a small drop of water on the inside of the legging; it should absorb quickly and spread out wide instead of beading up.
✔️ Opacity: Try on the leggings in bright light for best results. Bend your knee deeply; if you can see your skin through the fabric, it’s not fully opaque. Check again in a few months because fabric can thin out or fade over time.
✔️ Built-in features: There are a few design features that testers especially appreciated:
- Pockets: Testers requested leggings with pockets more than any other style. Testers especially liked when the leggings had both large side pockets and hidden waistband pockets to hold all their essentials. Note that some brands charge extra for pockets.
- Drawcord waistband: Some leggings have a hidden drawcord waistband to help keep the leggings in place, which is great if you have a smaller waist.
